BANGKOK, THAILAND – A unique Awards Ceremony was held in central Bangkok to celebrate innovations in corrugated cardboard packaging. Over a hundred unique submissions were received for this inaugural event, including a cardboard device robust enough to protect the integrity of an egg falling from 10,000 feet.

The Thai Corrugated Packaging Excellence Awards 2018 is a competition held by the Thai Corrugated Packaging Association (TCPA) on 27th August 2018 at Thailand Industrial Design Center in partnership with Thailand Industrial Design Center (Tha-IDC) and Mack Brooks Exhibition Asia ltd.

A total of 11 awards were given at the ceremony. The judges selected two winners from each category. The winners received 10,000 thb and the runners up received 5,000 thb.

The competition was open to submissions from professionals, young designers, students, and other businesses in the corrugated industry. The aim of the competition was to provide a platform for the participants to showcase their work, increase visibility in the industry, and in some cases highlight innovative solutions or improvements to the bottom line.

The awards were separated into 4 categories. First, Retail Consumer Packaging which focused on attractiveness. Second, Transportation Packaging which focused on prevention of product damage. Third, Point of Purchase which focused on the design gimmick. Last, Creative Corrugated Design Product which focused on creativeness. In addition, the best designs were selected according to aesthetic qualities, material choice, commercial appropriateness, reduction of paper consumption and transportation space.

The judges were composed of both academic and professionals in design, retail, and the corrugated industry, such as board of directors, head designers of companies, and university professors.

This year’s winner lineup included a well-rounded showcase of packaging and innovative design from individuals, teams, and companies who offer creativity and functionality to the growing corrugated industry. Noteworthy entries includes a wreath made by layering printed corrugated cardboards together which will not only be beautiful but long lasting and cost efficient as well, allowing the money you’d spend on a regular flower wreath to be donated to charities.

“It’s important for the corrugated industry to come up with new solutions and consider future generations. Good design can create a better consumer experience while lessening the impact on the environment. With this competition, we are able to advance those innovative designs in the world.” says Kanokwara Anutarawatr, Senior Manager, Mack Brooks Exhibitions Asia Ltd.

The CCE South East Asia 2018 event that is coming up is part of the group's broader aim to expand manufacturing capabilities and drive sustainable growth in the Thai Corrugated Packaging Manufacturing industry, in line with government's 'Thailand 4.0' digital-era development plan.

"Nowadays, corrugated packaging industries in ASEAN countries must be able to meet growing local demand and rising customer numbers. With a combined population of 620 million, most of working age, ASEAN countries have experienced a steady rise in consumer demand. This is a key factor driving national economic growth levels in the region, which has led to expansion of the consumer goods and packaging markets and recent innovations in the corrugated packaging industry.” Kanokwara added.
